Aliens and Spacecraft in Classic Paintings

UFO in classic religious painting Crucifixion

UFO?

For centuries, artists have looked beyond what is written and painted their interpretations of historical events. The classic paintings of the Renaissance period have given us vivid images of times long ago. Pictures have spoken louder than words in many cases. In many of these works of art, there is evidence that can be interpreted to mean that the interest in extraterrestrial life has been ongoing since before the Middle Ages. These paintings show many Biblical scenes such as the Madonna and the crucifixion of Jesus… and possibly a glimpse into the fascination of life beyond Earth.

Ancient artwork and coins show a large number of renderings of creatures that appear to be a combination of human and reptile. Many of the hieroglyphs from Sumerian mythology indicate that the human race came from the Annunaki, who were believed to be superior beings from the planet Nibiru. Petroglyphs from all over the world have shown symbols which appear to me images of another race of people. This inspired artists throughout the ages to recreate images of history which included these possibilities.

The Crucifixion

UFOs and The Crucifixion

Many of these paintings are Biblical in nature… one such example is simply entitled “The Crucifixion” and dates back to 1350. Looking at the top right and left hand corners, there are two images. These images appear to be craft of some kind, with creatures inside… watching Jesus as He is crucified. The artist is unknown, and the painting is said to be located in Kosovo, Yugoslavia inside a monastery. To look at the symbols begs the question… what could the artist have been seeing?

Another such painting is thought to be of the Filipino Lippi school… the Italian Renaissance painter who completed many of the wall and ceiling paintings (called “frescos”). This painting is entitled “The Madonna with Saint Giovannino” and it clearly shows what looks like a craft flying through the sky just above the Madonna’s shoulder as she is gazing upon the two small children. Behind her, a man and his dog are depicted as looking in wonder and fear at the object. There even appears to be some type of creature next to the man and his dog… is it a trick of the eyes, or could it be that the artist was projecting his own insight into what otherworldly beings might look like?

“The Annunciation” painted by Carlo Crivelli in 1486 shows what appears to be a bright stream of light breaking through the clouds shining directly on Mary as she stands in a doorway. The break in the clouds reveals what appears to be a disc-shaped object. In most of these paintings involving Mary, the light from these objects was always focused on her.

One of the most talked about paintings that combines Christian beliefs with possible contact from other planets is one called “Glorification of the Eucharist”. The painting was commissioned by the Church of San Pietro at the end of the 16th century to the painter Bonaventura Salimbeni, to be completed by the year 1600, for the Christian Jubilee. It was… and the object that sits between God and Christ has been the subject of debate for centuries. Some say it is simply a representation of the world… but there is an unusual hue to the sphere… almost metallic and glowing, and there are objects that appear to be antennae protruding on either side of it. At the bottom of the sphere, there is a protruding tube of some sort… very much resembling a small telescope.

The question is… why would there be so many paintings of a religious nature that seem to depict contact with other planets? During the Middle Ages, or between the fourteenth and eighteenth centuries, the Christian leaders of the times were censoring everything from books, music, and art to political views. Everything was under the watchful eye of the Church. When the painters of the Renaissance period especially were commissioned to paint, it was always religious in nature. The popular interpretation for many of these images has been they are angels spreading the message of God. This is what many believe the artists wanted the religious leaders to believe… so they could secretly convey their own beliefs of life outside the planet Earth.

Many paintings throughout the ages have raised the question of just what their creators had seen or what they may have believed. Aert De Gelder’s “The Baptism of Christ”, which was finished in 1710, appears to have a golden light shining upon Christ as John the Baptist performs the ritual. In looking closer, the light appears to be emanating from a large, disc-shaped object from above.

A tapestry called “Summer’s Triumph”, (1538) hangs in Bayerisches (Bavarian) National Museum, and shows a great celebration of the political hierarchy… being watched by what appears to be spacecraft just off in the horizon. The tapestry was created in Bruges, a province in Belgium, that was just beginning a period of financial turmoil at the start of the fourteenth century. It could be interpreted as representing the gluttony and pride of the elite being carefully monitored by… who?

The argument can be made, (and has) that these are simply depictions of clouds and paraedolia (the mind looking for something specific or familiar in a non-descript object) as the answer to the UFO’s in classic paintings question. Many of the religious paintings that have something possibly extra-terrestrial have been explained as being depictions of “angels and heavenly hosts”. However, we cannot forget that many of these artists were free thinkers… and could have been trying to get an opinion or belief expressed in cleverly hidden ways. It could be that they were inspired by the ancient teachings of the Sumerians… and it could be that they were expressing what they had personally seen. Leonardo DaVinci himself created concepts for inventions far beyond his time… and the armored car that he designed in the late 15th century looks very similar to the modern perception of a spacecraft.

It is this writer’s opinion that these great creators would be quite pleased that their works are being examined this closely… and inspiring minds to grasp the many realms of possibilities this universe has.

  1. yes, you are correct Divinci drew pictures of airplanes and aircraft long before the Wright brothers made their first airplanes.
I suspect the Wright probly copied ideas from Divinci. I would research Divinci he had some supernatural ability or with literature, painting, mechanical, mathmatics. Divinci was the greatest Genius of all time. No man since divinci has been so diversified. Divinci knew everything and was extremely gifted intellect.

  2. I was really fascinated while I was looking into it. I have always believed that artists put hidden meanings in their paintings, and this really makes you wonder what they were thinking…or possibly seeing. I genuinely believe that when they were required to paint a certain image, there had to be some resentment there. No artist likes to be told what to paint…and maybe they were trying to open people up to other beliefs in subtle ways.

  3. Saw the show Acient Aliens in regards to this… I really dont know , but it cetainly looks as if they either interpreted the shapes from descriptions within the Bible , which then in turn look like what we see as UFO’s , or else they saw the same things as we see nowadays. Certainly amazing to think about. Perhaps people were viewed as crackpots then as well for reporting these things and thats why there are no written historical accounts.

  4. Thanks for your comment, CMF…and I’m reminded of Ezekiel’s wheel, where he was describing something he was seeing…and a lot of interpretations of it look like he might have been seeing a UFO.

  5. u r right, now that i lookt at things, there are alot of ufos in classic atr.

  6. nice, now this is really exciting to think about doomsday, extraterrestrial life form, religion, science . . . . . now that’s a lot of question to answer

  7. ok here are my thoughts on this whole matter as i have done extensive research on alot of ancient writings and stories etc. and i definently think E.T’s lead these people to a huge cult which i think today has been blown wayy out of context. they drew these spacecraft thinking at that time that there normal godlike vehicles or whatever you want to call it. which is why the churches allowed the paintings to stay the way they are because it was a “normal happening” in those days of old. im happy that some of us are starting to wake up! as im not alone!

    • The big question is are ETs and angels, (whether good or bad)one and the same? Some Christians believe ETs are fallen angels bent on deceiving mankind whereas others believe they are physical advanced beings from perhaps another planet in another galaxy. My thoughts are -- does it matter one way or another whether we are being deceived by these beings? We are warned by some christians not to be sucked in by their deception -- what deception? They are what they are and do what they do to impress upon us -- so what -- why would/should it affect our well being in the afterlife. We humans may be very impressed by their displays and capabilities but, -- have they (ETs) influenced us adversely to murder, steal etc. -- NO, so why should we be weary of them and wish them away and, how would embracing them affect us after death?

The Lost Realms

Book 4 of the Earth Chronicle Series by Zecharia Sitchin

In the relatively short interval between the completion of the manuscript and its publication, archaeologists, linguists, and other scientists have offered a "coastal theory" in lieu of the "frozen trekking" one to account for man's arrival in the Americas--in ships, as this volume has concluded. These experts have "suddenly discovered 2,000 years of missing civilization" in the words of a Yale University scholar--confirming this book's conclusion--and are now linking the beginnings of such civilizations to those of the Old World, as Sumerian texts and biblical verses.
